THREE WAYS TO CUT COLLEGE COSTS
LESSON PLAN #7
Lesson Objective: The students will understand three ways to reduce the cost
of their college education. The students will have hands-on experience
formulating ways to cut cost college costs.
Procedure:
1. Inform the students that this lesson will concentrate on several ways to
cut college costs. The first way is by taking the College-Level
Examination Program or CLEP exams. Tell students that this is a test
that they can take to see if they have proficiency in certain areas of
study. There is a General Examinations exam (a broad-based test)
and the Subjects Examinations test that measures achievement in
specific college courses. Discuss Overhead 13 (CLEP: A Way To Cut
College Costs) with the class.
2. Tell students that another way to reduce college costs is by attending a
3. Explain to students that a third way to reduce college costs is to by
attending summer school. The summer semester is shorter and thus,
there may be a more strenuous workload but room and board is
generally less expensive than in other semesters. Tell students that
summer school is something they can explore.
4. Now split the students into pairs and tell them that they need to create
three more ways that they could cut their college costs. They can use
their book, The Financial Answer Book, if they need assistance with
their assignment. When all students have completed the task, have
students share their information with the rest of the class.
Materials: Overheads 13 & 14, projector and screen.
Assignment: Read chapters 9 & 10 in The Financial Aid Answer Book.
