Why Attend a Community College?
Why were community colleges created? 1) To serve as a bridge from high
school to college by providing courses for transfer toward a B.A. or B.S. degree
at a college or university and 2) To prepare students for the job market by
providing career skills training.
Are community colleges less expensive than colleges or universities?
Tuition at a community college is significantly less than at private or state
colleges and universities. The average tuition for a community college is $1,500.
What if I don't want to go to college for four years? Community colleges
offer an associate degree (an Associates in Arts or Associate in Applied Science)
which takes two years to complete.
How many students attend community colleges? Four out of ten college-
bound students high school graduates start college in a community college.
What is the difference between the faculty at a community college and a
four-year educational institution? The faculty at a community college are not
required to publish or do research so they focus on teaching. The ratio of
students to instructor is also generally smaller at a community college.
Is there financial aid at a community college? Community colleges offer
financial aid too. You'll need to contact the Financial Aid Office at your college
for specific information.
