To Bill Rosenblatt and the Relatives of the
American Prisoners in Franco Spain. To the
officers and office staff of the Friends of the
Lincoln Brigade, who worked more often
than not late into the night and for two
protracted periods with little or no pay.
Merely to name them, which unhappily is all
that space will allow, is to recall their
indefatigable energy and the multiplicity of
the problems they faced:
and dozens of volunteer workers who spent
long hours on dull and anonymous work.
Let our enemies note well that this devotion
is of such high value that it cannot be bought.
The Friends of the Lincoln Brigade now
moves aside to give place to the men it has
served for over 2 1/2 years. The Veterans of
the Lincoln Brigade, meeting directly their
own responsibilities, will be able most
competently to face the two fold task which
The job of repatriation and rehabilitation is
not completed. A dozen veterans still live

Seven still suffer in Franco prisons.
There are still men in hospitals and men
who are disabled and in need of care.
And the Veterans of the Lincoln Brigade
have an even deeper responsibility, a
debt to their own record and service and
to the dead they left in Spain. Spain
fights on and will yet be free, and
returning from her mighty and costly
struggle, the Veterans of the Lincoln
Brigade bring to America standards of
steadfastness and clarity in the defense
of peace and democracy and civil
liberties. Their activities must and will
bring these standards to the American
people, and set these standards beside all
who claim they represent and work in
the interests of the American people.
Thus will the charlatan and demagogue
be revealed. Thus will America hold to
the best of her traditions of justice and
In these tasks the Veterans will have
wide and eager assistance. Their friends,
properly no longer directing the work,
will enroll by hundreds and thousands,
here and elsewhere throughout the
country, in the Auxiliaries which will be
attached to each Post of the Veterans of
the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. With this
assistance, in raising funds and in
reaching out to broader organizations of
the American people and areas of
American life, the Veterans of the
Abraham Lincoln Brigade will march
firmly forward, shock troops still in the
defense of peace and democracy.
