SHERRILL TO RETIRE AT SEASON'S CONCLUSION
Mississippi State head coach Jackie Sherrill announced on Friday,
10/17, that he would retire from coaching following the 2003 football sea-
son. Thursday night's season-ender against Mississippi is the 304th of
his collegiate coaching career.
SHERRILL IS 25TH ON ACTIVE COACHING LIST
Mississippi State head coach Jackie Sherrill is 25th on the NCAA's
list of the nation's winningest active coaches (by percentage), fourth on
the active career wins list. Sherrill currently holds a .601 winning per-
centage in nearly 26
full seasons as a col-
legiate head coach.
During his career,
Sherrill has compiled
a 180-119-4 overall
record. On the active
wins list, only Joe
Paterno (Penn State), Bobby Bowden (Florida State) and Lou Holtz
(South Carolina) rank ahead of the MSU head coach.
SHERRILL IS 18TH ON SEC'S ALL-TIME LIST
Mississippi State head football coach Jackie Sherrill's 75 victories at
the head of the Bulldog football program have him No. 18 on the
Southeastern Conference's coach's all-time winning list. Sherrill's 43
SEC-only wins rank 14th in the league.
SHERRILL MOVES TO 28TH ON NCAA ALL-TIME LIST
With Mississippi State's win over Memphis, Jackie Sherrill moved
into 28th place on the NCAA Division I-A, all-time wins list with 180 victo-
ries (26 seasons). Sherrill is tied with Gil Dobie (180 wins; 33 seasons)
and Carl Snavely (180 wins; 32 seasons).
UM QB COACH WORKED AT STATE UNDER SHERRILL
Mississippi quarterback coach and passing game coordinator Kurt
Roper was a graduate assistant working in the sports video department
under MSU head coach Jackie Sherrill in 1995.
HOLLIDAY, DRIESBACH ONCE WORKED TOGETHER
Mississippi State wide receiver coach Guy Holliday and Mississippi
defensive coordinator and defensive backfield coach Chuck Driesbach
were on the same sideline as members of the Western Michigan coach-
ing staff in 2000.
