lane to the LIE from exit 30 to 64 and completing the service roads between exits 43-46 and
widening of Northern State Parkway between Meadowbrook and Wantagh Parkways)
prioritize the widening of the rest, high speed ferries to New Haven and improve mass transit
for intra-island commuting. C) Having the LIRR have stops on the east side of NYC and
downtown NYC while increasing parking at all its facilities. D) LILCO, do what ever is
necessary either by takeover or competition to lower energy costs by 15% - 20% by 2000. E)
Phase out state's petroleum business tax and gross receipts tax. F) Enhance the energy
conservation program.
13. Economic Development- A) Recruit high technology companies, B) Continue state
sponsored programs like the Defense Diversification to help business C) Reverse the trend
of companies leaving New York and institute a reverse recruitment program designed at bring
back companies that have left. D) Reverse the "brain drain - many of our top graduating
students grew up and were educated here and are leaving since they can't find affordable
housing. The Long Island Association and the Long Island Housing Partnership have been
making some progress but more must be done.
14. Expand high speed ferry service across the Long Island Sound.
15 .Affordable housing - A) By having County government get more involved in development
by floating bonds and financing the infrastructure improvements, supplying County owned land.
B) Redevelopment of existing sites that are located in close proximity to highways and LIRR
such as the site at Hunters Point and conversion of certain office buildings.
16. Reconstitute the Staten Island Railway. Since it is connected to the New Jersey rail
network it could provide valuable shipping to Long Island in connection with the LIRR's efforts
to expand its freight handling opportunities.
17.Tourism- A) Continue promoting Long Island's benefits i.e. beaches, attractions, proximity
to NYC. B) construction of a convention center.
18. Environment- A) Vigorously protect the Pine Barrens and preserve east end farms by
purchasing development rights . B) Install sewers in highly populated areas where none are
available now. C) Large industrial belts in Suffolk County should be hooked to the sewerage
system. D) Establish a scientific "think tank" of scientists to advise government leaders. E)
Increase the term of supervisors so that long term policies take precedent over short term
quick fixes. F) Create an environmental technology park which would have the effect of
attracting these types of businesses to Long Island. G) Refer to The Environmental Damage

19. Development Projects- A) Grumman facility at Bethpage- this could be a multi-use facility
with residential, retail, entertainment, rail links, conference center, offices and hotel. This could
also be converted to movie studios (hangars) B) Republic Fairchild site - possibilities include
office/industrial to be used in conjunction with the airport and linkup with the LIRR station.
Other grander uses have been proposed and announced which include hotel, conference
center and yes, more retail. C) Kings Park Psychiatric Center- There is no clear answer yet
