Mrs. Bluezette's Grammar Guide
canceled/postponed
Mrs. B "postponed" lessons on some of the usage mistakes she
noticed during the live coverage of the terrorist attacks.
(You had enough on your mind!)
But she did not "cancel" them.
"Postpone" means to delay until a future time.
v
The powers that be decided to POSTPONE baseball and football.
"Cancel" means to remove it from the calendar.
v
RTNDA was CANCELED this year.
Mrs. B sends you off with a spelling reminder and challenge for you
Renaissance men.
"Canceled" has only one "L."
"Cancellation" has two.
"A man should be able to: change a diaper, plan an invasion,
butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet,
balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying,
take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations,
analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook
a tasty meal, fight efficiently, and die gallantly. Specialization is
for insects."
