Mrs. Bluezette's Grammar Guide
comparisons, part 1
Form the comparative of ONE-syllable adjectives and adverbs by
adding "er."
Form the superlative by adding "est."
late/later/latest
soon/sooner/soonest
Here're some exceptions:
good/better/best
bad/worse/worst
far/farther or further/farthest or furthest
many/more/most
Form the comparative of TWO-syllable adjectives and adverbs either
by adding "er" or by using either "more" or "less" with it.
Form the superlative by adding "est" or by using "most" or "least"
with it.
Mrs. B believes you'll know by sound, which works better.
happy/happier/happiest
often/more (or less) often/most (or least) often
helpful/more helpful/most helpful
hostile/more hostile/most hostile
Form the comparative of adjectives and adverbs with THREE OR
MORE syllables by using "more" or "less."
Form the superlative by using "most" or "least."
competent/more competent/most competent
skillfully/more skillfully/most skillfully
Be sure you don't make DOUBLE comparisons, like "more kinder"
or "most cheapest."
You have to choose: use either the "er" and "est" OR "more" and
"most" but not both.
Part 2 of the lesson on comparisons is coming up tomorrow.
