Chapter 5 Redundancies
183
the "very" latest, shooting "incident,"
extradite "back," counterfeit "fake," import "in"
From Los Angeles comes "the very latest":
"That one makes me crazy (it's either `the latest' or it's not), but
I hear it every day on every LA station and all the networks."
John Beard, KTTV-TV
Mrs. B knows you want your tease to grab viewers, but "very" is
trying too hard when stuck between "the" and "latest."
It doesn't enhance; it diminishes.
And then there's "shooting incident."
A shooting is a shooting.
Why tack on "incident"?
v
We'll have THE LATEST on THE SHOOTING, when we come
back.
And from Atlanta, this redundancy report:
extradite "back" (instead of EXTRADITE)
counterfeit "fake" (instead of COUNTERFEIT)
import "in" (instead of IMPORT )
Donna Fowler, former newsperson
Try to make it a "redundancy-less" day, or at least a less redundant
day.
