Mrs. Bluezette's Grammar Guide
ATM "machine," "violent" rape, arson "fire,"
"hot" water heater, 3 A.M. "this morning,"
"Jewish" rabbi, "mass" exodus, fatally shot "dead,"
VCR "recorder"
Mrs. B's readers love to talk about redundancies they hate.
A producer in New York names his:
"My biggest bugaboos are ATM machine (automated teller
machine machine), terrible crime/frightening murder/violent rape
(What nice ones are there?).
"Also, how come some people put the state abbreviation after
big, famous cities? Ever hear of Philadelphia, CT? How about
Los Angeles, NJ? And my guess is there's no Honolulu, NY..."
Don Ennis
CBS 2
Freelance producer Allan Levy suggests a few more redundancies to
ruminate on:
arson "fire"
"hot" water heater
3 A.M. "in the morning"
"Jewish" rabbi
And Mrs. B adds these:
"mass" exodus (mass means a large number of people leaving)
fatally shot "dead"
VCR "recorder" (VCR stands for video cassette recorder)
Mrs. B wishes you a day of redundancy free newscasts and promos.
It's one thing you can beat the competition in, for sure.
