Chapter 4 Pronunciations
165
juvenile, accessory, epitome, comparable,
negotiate, oyster, chasm
Mrs. B has been saving up several words for this lesson.
They're words she has heard mispronounced and doesn't want you to
be one of those doing the mispronouncing.
"Juvenile" is JOO-vun-ul.
Put the accent on the first syllable.
An "accessory" is someone who helps someone else commit a crime
or avoid arrest.
It's pronounced ack-SESS-ur-ee.
"Epitome" means the best example of something.
Say ee-PIT-uh-mee.
"Comparable" is CAHM-per-uh-bul.
Again, the accent is on the first syllable.
"Negotiate" is ne-GO-shee-ate
(not ne-GO-SEE-ate).
"Oyster" is OYS-ter (not OYS-CHUR).
"Chasm," a crack or hole in the ground, is CAZ-um (not CHAZ-um).
Pronouncing words correctly is what will help class you as a
professional broadcast journalist.
And that's Mrs. B's goal with this course.
