PC terms, part 2
AFRICAN AMERICAN has gained wide acceptance, especially in
the media, but recent polls in the black community continue to show
a strong preference for "black" (according to The American Heritage
Book of English Usage).
PERSON OF COLOR is preferred over "nonwhite."
ANGLO is used especially in the Southwest and in southern
California to distinguish a white English-speaking person from a
person of Hispanic heritage.
ASIAN has replaced "Oriental."
An American of Asian descent is an Asian American.
When appropriate, use a more specific term, such as JAPANESE
AMERICAN, CHINESE AMERICAN, or KOREAN AMERICAN.
No hyphen.
HISPANIC and LATINO are often used interchangeably for a person
of Spanish-language heritage living in the U-S.
HISPANIC is preferred in Texas and Florida and in most of the
Southwest.
LATINO is most popular in California.
Whenever possible, consider substituting a term such as MEXICAN
AMERICAN, CUBAN AMERICAN, or PUERTO RICAN.
It's a toss up between NATIVE AMERICAN and AMERICAN
INDIAN, at least for now.
While generally welcoming the respectful tone of Native American,
Indian writers have continued to use "American Indian" as much, if
not more, than the more recent term.
There is no stigma to using "Jew" as a noun.
