due to, because of
"Due to" introduces an adjective phrase and should modify a noun.
Use it after some form of the verb "to be" (is, are, was, were, etc.).

Her Emmy nomination was DUE TO solid reporting.
"Due to solid reporting" modifies the noun "nomination."

The shutdown is DUE TO snow.
"Due to snow" modifies the noun "shutdown."
"Because of," on the other hand, introduces an adverbial phrase and
should modify a verb.

We canceled the shoot BECAUSE OF a shortage of photogs.
"Because of a shortage of photogs" modifies "canceled," answering
the question "why?"
Remember?
Adverbs modify verbs.

The superintendent closed schools BECAUSE OF a snow
emergency.
"Because of a snow emergency" modifies "closed," answering the
question "why?"
This would be much easier is Mrs. B could stand at the board and
diagram sentences for you.
In lieu of that, if there is a "to be" verb, you may use "due to."
Otherwise, use "because of."
