Chapter 2 Word Choice
91
emigrant/immigrant, emigrate/immigrate,
illicit/elicit
Mrs. B is seeing some confusion lately about the difference between
"emigrant" and "immigrant" and "emigrate" and "immigrate."
To "emigrate" means to leave one country or region to settle in
another.
So an "emigrant" leaves her native home.
To "immigrate" means to enter a new country after leaving the old
one behind.
So an "immigrant" comes into a country.
v
Our neighbors EMIGRATED FROM Vietnam.
v
They IMMIGRATED TO the United States.
"Illicit" means "unlawful" or "improper."
"Elicit" means "to call forth" or "to invite."
v
A network correspondent's ILLICIT relationship with a minor
made the headlines.
v
The announcement about the overnights is bound to ELICIT
cheers.
Mrs. B hopes you avoid an ILLICIT relationship today and do
something to ELICIT kudos, instead.
