Gastrointestinal
The Gastrointestinal specialty area rating is based on:
·
Gastrointestinal bleed
·
Bowel obstruction
·
Pancreatitis
·
Gastrointestinal procedures and surgeries
·
Cholecystectomy
We first calculate the average star ratings for gastrointestinal bleed, bowel obstruction, and pancreatitis for
inhospital mortality, inhospital +1 month mortality, and inhospital +6 month mortality. The Gastrointestinal
rating is a weighted star average of those ratings, plus gastrointestinal procedures and surgeries and
cholecystectomy. To receive a rating in this specialty area, a hospital had to have star ratings in all five
medical issues based on MedPAR data.
General Surgery
The General Surgery services area rating is based on:
·
Appendectomy
·
Bowel obstruction
·
Cholecystectomy
To be included in this ranking, a hospital must have a rating in all three general surgical procedures:
appendectomy, bowel obstruction, and cholecystectomy. To be ranked, a hospital must be located in one of
the 17 all-payer states used to calculate appendectomy ratings, and the hospital must have ratings for bowel
obstruction and cholecystectomy based on MedPAR data.
Joint Replacement
The Joint Replacement surgery specialty area rating is based on:
·
Total knee replacement
·
Total hip replacement
The Joint Replacement surgery rating is a weighted star average, based on national volume. To receive a
rating in this specialty area, a hospital had to provide both total knee replacement and total hip replacement,
and have a star rating in both procedures based on MedPAR data.
