ata Technology has computer-
ized the cutting of steel rule
with a new rule processing
machine for the corrugated diemaking
industry. Previously, the cutting opera-
tion was performed with manual tools
and the cut length was controlled with
gauges and mechanical stops. The new
machine, designed around a program-
mable Galil motion controller, is more
accurate, convenient and faster.
Data Technology's RRP466 Rotary
Rule Processor for cutting steel rule
uses the Galil DMC-1770 seven-axis
ISA bus controller. The machine
processes 0.042 to 0.056 inch spring
steel in both curved and straight for-
mats. The machine feeds the steel from
either coils or strips and then automati-
cally cuts it to the programmed length.
Accuracy is to 0.0015 inch. The
machine marks both bending positions
and piece identification numbers using
a pneumatic stamp.

The greatest advantage to using the
Galil controller was its programmabili-
ty. The operator now makes selections
on a Windows-based menu-driven
screen. Data Technology programmed
their operator interface in C. Galil's C
programming tools were helpful in
implementing the controller into the C
environment. Galil's DMCWIN soft-
ware provided the C libraries and the
DLLs for communications.
Data Technology also found Galil's
WSDK servo tuning software useful
in tuning the servos quickly and easily
for optimum performance. Galil's
