How to Specify Motion Control

Introduction

S T E P O N E :
Select the controller.
1. Specify the communication interface (RS232, ISA bus,
VME bus, PC/104 or stand-alone.)
2. Specify the number of axes needed for your application.
3. Specify any special requirements, such as I/O, electronic
gearing, or auxiliary encoder inputs.
(Use the Controller Selection Guide on pages 10 & 11 to
compare features.)
S T E P T W O :
Size motors and amplifiers.
Galil's Motion Controller Selector (MCS) software (page
84) is a useful tool for sizing motors and amplifiers to meet
your motion and load requirements. You can choose from
Galil's stock of amplifiers and servo motors or you can
select these components from another vendor. Your local
representative will also help you select the best motors and
amplifiers for your application.
S T E P T H R E E :
Determine the needed interconnect
between controller and amplifiers.
Galil's mating amplifier packages connect directly to Galil
controllers. They come complete with convenient screw
terminals for connecting other hardware. (For example,
the AMP-1100 amplifier connects directly to DMC-1000
ribbon cables.)
If you are using another amplifier, the appropriate Galil
interconnect board makes connection easier by splitting rib-
bon cables from the controller into screw-type terminals.
To see how mating amplifiers, interconnect boards, and
controllers work together, see the Mating Amplifiers and
Interconnect Boards table on the next page.
S T E P F O U R :
Specify software tools.
Galil's WSDK Servo Design Kit software is recommended
for first-time Galil controller users. It includes terminal
emulators for fast communication, a storage scope for view-
ing actual position and velocity, and a complete set of tools
for servo tuning and analysis. (WSDK is available in 16-bit
or 32-bit formats.)
Galil's COMDISK includes a terminal emulator and sam-
ple drivers written in BASIC and C. It also supplies DLLs for
Windows 3.X, Windows NT, and Windows 95.
Other useful software packages include a Visual BasicTM
tool kit, and translators for AutoCAD, G-code, and HPGL.
