TOE-IN
The front of the brake shoes should be "toed-in." Toed-in means
that the front of the pad of both shoes contact the rim first
followed by the back of the pad. Toed-in brakes result in a more
progressive application of braking force.
Do not reverse or "toe-out" the pads as this can result in the
brakes "grabing" the rim instead of the progressive and smooth
application force.
To set toe-in:
The brake shoes have a convex washer (1) which permits the
toe-in adjustment. Loosen the fixing bolt (3), enough so it
lightly holds the pads (2) correctly in the brake track of the rim.
See Fig 2.
Hold the pads in so that they are toed-in about .5 mm and
tighten then fixing bolts.
Be sure to test the brakes before riding.

WARNING:
As a reasonable person would expect,
we cannot predict the mechanical skill of anyone in the
field, and cannot teach bicycle mechanics. Please
understand that the information provided here is intended
for competent, experienced bicycle mechanics familiar
with bicycle terminology, service techniques and
equipped with proper tools.
Via our website, or on paper, information is also available
to Cannondale owners. While Cannondale strongly
recommends that all mechanical work be performed by a
retailer, we encourage owners to understand the
mechanics of their bicycles.
Inexperienced mechanics or owners attempting to perform
the procedures described can damage their bicycle.
Improper mechanical work increases the risk of an
accident. Any bicycle accident has risk of serious injury
or death. To minimize these risks, we strongly recommend
that owners always have mechanical work done by an
authorized Cannondale retailer.
