Rear Wheel Installation Points
Please observe the following points when removing and reinstalling the rear wheel:
See Figure 7. Always clean and inspect the entire rear brake carrier assembly,
axle, dropout axle bore and the right dropout relief (b) and derailleur hanger.
Make sure the brake carrier is in good condition and assembled correctly.
When the brake caliper is removed, be sure to handle it carefully.
CAUTION:
Do not kink, twist or bend the brake line. Do not allow. the caliper to hang by
the brake line. Prevent pad and rotor contamination (dirt, grease, or oils).
Always, apply a thin film of grease to all mating surfaces and reapply fresh
Loctitre where indicated (see right).
See Figure 8. Be sure to align the oval shape (a) of the axle with that of the
dropout hole (b). Notice that the axle hole (c) aligns with the dropout gap (d)
when the matching shapes are aligned. Also, as you slide the axle through
the hub, make sure the drive side end of the axle fits with the drive side
dropout relief. If it contacts the inner face of the drive side drop out, it will
prevent the axle from sliding in fully and the oval features of the axle and non-
drive side drop out will not fit together.
Tighten according to the sequence indicated at right.
Slip a hex wrench through the axle hole ( c) hole to hold it it from rotating
when you install and tighten the axle bolt B.
When reinstalling the brake caliper assembly onto the carrier make sure the
brake rotor locates between the brake pads properly. Use Loctite #242 on the
caliper mounting bolts and tighten to 5.0 Nom (44.2 Inolbs).
WARNING
THE BRAKES STSYEM ON YOUR BIKE IS A SAFETY-CRITICAL SYSTEM.
Incorrectly installing the rear wheel, rear brake assembly (brake link arm, brake
carrier, brake caliper and pads) or performing work improperly can result in
serious brake damage. You can lose the ability to slow or stop your bike when
riding. You can be severely injured or killed in a resulting accident. Always
thoroughly test your brakes and make sure they function properly.
