GENERAL GUIDELINES
Please observe the following throughout this manual and whenever you work on your bike:
1. Always clean your bike before inspecting it or working on it.
2. Always clean the threads of removed bolts and, if required, re-apply the specified Loctite #.
SELECTION AND INSTALLATION OF COMPONENTS ON A GEMINI FRAMESET:
If you choose to assemble a complete bicycle from a frameset, you must make many component choices. Consult with your
Cannondale Dealer and the component manufacturers and frankly discuss your riding style, ability, weight, and interest in
and patience for maintenance. Generally speaking, lighter weight components have shorter lives. In selecting lightweight
components you are making a trade-off, favoring the higher performance that comes with less weight over longevity. If you
choose more lightweight components you must inspect them more frequently. If you are a heavier rider or have a rough,
abusive or "go for it" riding style, buy heavy duty components. No matter what components you and your retailer choose,
contact the component manufacturer to confirm that the component is compatible with the Gemini and intended for your
weight and riding style. Read and follow the component manufacturers warnings and instructions.
DETERMINING CHAIN LENGTH
When building a GEMINITM frameset into a bike, or when you need to replace your chain, there are two ways to select the
correct chain length for a GEMINITM:
Two ways to determine chain length:
Position the chain on the largest front chainring, the largest rear cog, and through the rear derailleur (with the cage at a
45°angle). Measure the chain length required and add two full links more to the length.
Or, remove the rear shock to simulate full compression of the suspension. With the chain on the big front chainring, the big
rear cog, and through the rear derailleur (with the cage at a 45°angle), measure the chain length. Use the actual chain
length measured.
CHAIN RETENTION DEVICES
Chain retention devices conforming to the International Standard Chain Guide (ISCG) standard.can be mounted on the
Gemini (all models). However, due to variances in design within the ISCG standard and component quality, some
"compatible" devices may fit and work better than others. For that reason, we recommend that you run the rear suspension
through its complete range of travel when checking the device for interference. As always, its a great idea to consult with
your Cannondale Dealer about compatibility before deciding on any component for your bike.
CAUTION: Never position the clamp of a work stand on frame seattube. Position it on the seat post. Make sure the seat
post is clamped in the seattube securely.
CAUTION: NEVER POWER WASH YOUR BIKE, USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS OR SOLVENTS. Power washing can
force lubricants out and force contaminants into bearings and other "sealed" areas. This will promote corrosion,
damage, or accelerated wear. Abrasives and solvents will damage the bike finish (clearcoat/decals/base paint).
CAUTION: DO NOT machine (or "re-face") the frame (bottom bracket, heatube, seattube) All frame surfaces are
accurately machined at the Cannondale factory. Although, refacing these areas is a traditional step in bike frame
preparation;doing so damages the frame.
CAUTION: Never modify your bike or its components is any way.
WARNING: Riding with the wrong chain length (too short or too long) may damage the chain,
rear derailleur, derailleur hanger, swingarm, and/or other drivetrain components, and may cause
a crash, possibly resulting in injury or death. Make sure chain length is correct. Consult with
your Cannondale Dealer.
