CHAPTER TWO
Guide to Safe Bicycle Trailer Use
Make sure you are familiar with the child carrier.
Before using the bicycle trailer, read Chapter One,
Guide to
Safe Child Carrier Use
, and this chapter,
Guide to Safe Bicycle
Trailer Use
.
Make sure you are familiar with the bicycle trailer.
Familiarize yourself with the use of the mechanisms on this
trailer. Before pulling the trailer, practice with the trailer
attached, but without a child in it, at slower speeds in a
flat, empty parking lot. Take all the time you need before
attempting to ride with a child. Get the feel of the trailer and
thoroughly check the connections before riding with a child.
The maximum capacity of a Trek child carrier in bicycle
trailer mode is 100 pounds (45 kg) including child and luggage
or other supplies.
When the child carrier is used as a bicycle trailer, the child's
feet must not reach the bicycle's rear wheel.

Check the trailer hitch tongue for signs of stress
or fatigue.

Before pulling a trailer have the lead bicycle inspected by a
qualified bicycle mechanic, or read the lead bicycle Owner's
Manual and check the lead bicycle before using it to pull the
trailer. Especially follow the inspection instructions for the type
of brake on the lead bicycle. If the brakes do not pass inspec-

take the bicycle to your dealer for service.
Check the connection of the trailer to the lead
bicycle.
Check that the trailer is correctly attached to the lead bicycle.
