How can I assess the learning process?
The opportunity to publish their work is a strong motivating factor for students.
One approach to motivating them still further is to hold the class's own awards show.
For example, votes could be cast within the following categories:
· Best Picture
· Best Documentary
· Best Original Screenplay
· Best Screenplay Adapted from Another Medium (such as a book or play)
· Best Cinematography
· Best Science Movie
· Best Special Effects
You might also include awards for individual, excellence or teamwork, e.g. Best Director
and Best Actor awards for individuals, and Best Teamwork for the group that showed
themselves to be the best at working together.
To judge the movies for the awards, you can ask each student to cast a vote in each
category, or you can select a group of people outside the classroom forum to review
the films. You may wish to include educators with a subject matter specialty such as
Literature, History, Science, or Music. The judging strategy and judges selected should
vary depending upon the types of movies created by the class.
To help the judges vote in an organized and consistent manner, create a rubric to follow.
Here is an example:
Rate each aspect of the movie from 1 to 5 , circle the number corresponding to your rating
