Defining "panorama",
this shot was taken
from the summit
looking south into
Nepal. The dark sky
reveals outer space to
be much closer than
we think.

Capturing the full
effect of the crashing
wave, we are
reminded of just how
treacherous the seas
can be... and how
very important
lighthouses are.
Norman Rockwell - Four Freedoms
On January 6, 1941, as President Franklin D. Roosevelt closed his State of the Union Address to
Congress, he described his vision for a better way of life through what he considered the four essential
human freedoms: Freedom to Worship, Freedom from Fear, Freedom from Want and Freedom of Speech.
Almost two years later, with the United States in the throes of World War II, Norman Rockwell painted a
series of paintings called the Four Freedoms in an effort to reinforce their importance, while at the same
time, simplifying their complexity. After four months, when he was finished, the United States
government used them quite successfully to enhance family values, unity, and patriotism at a time
when it was most needed. These paintings gained immediate notoriety.

The lighthouses of Europe have long fascinated photographer Jean Guichard. With his
photographs of isolated outposts, Guichard wishes to show, "simply, that man sometimes
does good for his fellow man."
This collection of photographs of the lighthouses of the world captures the isolation and
fortitude of these structures, and the special people who live in them.
