(3) Camshaft
The camshaft is made of high-strength cast-iron alloy (containing nickel, chrome and
molybdenum).
Lightweight camshaft means reduced inertia, by which the camshaft can be more accurately
controlled by the cam chain.
The wall thickness of the camshaft on the 2003 GSX-R1000 is thinner than the 2002 GSX-R1000.
The inner diameter of the hollow camshaft is increased from 15.5mm on the 2002 GSX-R1000 to
16.5mm on the 2003 GSX-R1000, while the outer diameter is 24mm, which is unchanged.
As a result, intake camshaft on the 2003 GSX-R1000 is 45 grams lighter than the 2002 GSX-
R1000. The exhaust camshaft on the 2003 GSX-R1000 is 35 grams lighter than the 2002 GSX-
R1000.
