INTAKE AND EXHAUST CONTROL
AND ENGINE MANEGEMENT SYSTEM
(6) Slotted Air Funnel
The new GSX-R1000 uses slotted air funnel, just like the 2002 GSX-R1000.
The intake system on the GSX-R1000 has an intake pipe that is completely straight and shaped
as a very simple form, in order to minimize intake resistance and thus obtain high intake effi-
ciency.
Generally, with such intake pipe, the dampening of pressure waves (intake pulses) inside the
intake pipe is very small, which tends to create spikes and drops in torque output at mid- and
high-range caused by such intake pulses.
Such spikes/drops in torque in some cases can be utilized to gain high maximum torque and
maximum power outputs within a narrow rpm range, but for large-displacement engines with high
absolute torque output, the spikes/drops can spoil the ease of use, or tractability, of such engines.
Therefore, for the GSX-R1000, we have used a slotted air funnel, as a means to dampen such
intake pulses.
With the use of this slotted air funnel, we have been able to enhance torque-output characteristics
at mid- and high-range and bring about power-output characteristics that respond smoothly to the
rider's inputs, despite this being a big-torque, 1000cc engine.
Airbox capacity is 10.2 liters, same as the 2002 GSX-R1000.
