RANSON, WEST VIRGINIA

The Charles Town Mining, Manufacturing, and Improvement Company played an instrumental role in creating Ranson, West Virginia. In 1890, the company bought 850 acres adjoining the western and northern corporate limits of Charles Town. The largest tract of land purchased was from the Ranson family. The City of Ranson in Jefferson County, West Virginia, was officially established in 1910. It was named in honor of Dr. James Ranson, a dentist and farmer living in the area. Early photographs of Ranson show the offices of the Charles Town Mining, Manufacturing & Improvement Company and the Hotel Powhatan, along with a few residential structures nearby. The community grew North from Lancaster Circle and by 1910, its residents decided to form their own town. On October 15, 1910, by a vote of 69 to 2, Ranson incorporated and three days later, it became a separate town from Charles Town.

Ranson is host to major companies such as Amerigas, RC Cola, 84 Lumber, Potomac Marketplace which includes; Home Depot, Weis Market, Kohls, Petco and a host of complementary stores and restaurants. With the continued expansion of Potomac Marketplace and the start of its sister retail development, Ranson Gateway, everything for a quality life is within easy reach. Recently the town has seen significant increases in commercial revitalization of the “Old Town” district and the renovation of old homes as well as vigorous new home construction by many local and national builders.

Over the past twenty years, the commercial district in Ranson has developed and now includes grocery stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, restaurants, department stores, specialty shops, and garages, which are primarily locally owned and operated. With Jefferson Memorial Hospital on Preston Street, between 3rd and 5th Avenues, Ranson began to develop a prosperous medical community with many doctors opening offices in and around the hospital. The City is proud to host a U.S. Post Office and other Federal, State, and local Field Offices.

Today, Ranson has grown from the vision of being an industrial center to a community that blends major corporations with quiet residential neighborhoods and a developing commercial district
