Prize-winning poet Philip Levine captivated the stand-
ing-room-only audience at the fourth annual ALBA-Bill
Susman Lecture at NYU's King Juan Carlos I Center on
October 12. Speaking about "Poetry & the Spanish Civil
War," the Detroit-born poet wove his own work into a
commentary about the writings of Pablo Neruda, Miguel
Hernandez, and Cesar Vallejo, presenting a careful balance
of readings and analysis. A lively discussion and reception
followed the formal talk.
Previous speakers include the classicist and Spanish
Civil War veteran Bernard Knox, historian Gabriel Jackson,
and Spanish magistrate Baltasar Garzón. Next year's lec-
ture, scheduled for October 18, will be given by novelist E.
L. Doctorow.
