MR. PAUL BURNS, National Commander.
Dec. 22, 1939.
Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.
Hotel Diplomat, New York.

Dear Paul:
On behalf of the editors and staff of NEW MASSES, I extend warmest
fraternal greetings to the veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, meeting in
New York City on the occasion of their third national convention.
The editors of NEW MASSES feel a warm kinship with the Vets of the
Brigade and rightly so. Brilliant young Arnold Reid, who gave his life that
democracy might live in Spain, was a NEW MASSES editor. Edwin Rolfe.
another editor, spent 20 months in the Spanish war. Alvah Bessie, our drama
critic, was one of the many soldiers in the International Brigade and Jack Bjoze
of our circulation department saw action on the Spanish fighting front for two
years.
We are proud that so many men associated with NEW MASSES served in
Spain. We are equally proud that NEW MASSES was a vital force not only here
in America, where it did its bit in galvanizing sentiment and assistance for the
American boys fighting for democracy and liberty, but that NEW MASSES was
eagerly sought and read in Spain by the fighting men of the Brigade.
I remember writing a dispatch from Spain how I would come up to the lines
and find the men lying in the insecure shade of an olive tree as Capronis and
Messerschmitts passed overhead seeking the Battalion. That was the time to lie
low. But the men weren't wasting time, more than often I found them lying there
reading -- NEW MASSES - THEIR MAGAZINE!
Today NEW MASSES does its bit in the even bigger fight to keep America
out of the imperialist war. We, the editors of NEW MASSES, salute the veterans
of the Spanish war and say to them "the good fight goes on."
