VETS IN HOSPITAL
Here's a list of some of the veterans who
are still in hospitals. Every vet who can
manage it ought to make it a point to write
them a line, or drop in on one of them.
Let's see just how comradely you are!
Hospitals are no fun, as a lot of us know.
ROGER HARGRAVES is in the State
University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City,
and will be there for about six months
more, with wounds of the arm and leg. He
was in the Sanidad of the Lincoln-
Washing.
CLARENCE
PRINCE
is
at
the
Sunnyside Sanatorium, Indianapolis,
Indiana. He was in the artillery.
GEORGE NEBER can be reached by
addressing the Cleveland Office, which
will forward mail to him. He was a driver
in the 21st Army Corps.
VINCENT SANCHIS is in the Queens
General Hospital, Jamaica, L.I., N. Y. He
reads both English and Spanish, and was a
lieutenant in the Mac-Paps.
MOE FISHMAN is at his home 2909
Broadway, Astoria, L.I. N.Y. He's just
coming out of a hip cast--we hope.
ABE AVRUM is in the Montefiore
Hospital, Gunhill Road, Bronx, N. Y.
NICK COMMINAS is at the Bellevue
Hospital, 28th St., and First Avenue,
N.Y.C. He's paralyzed and reads only
Greek. (Let's see you Greek vets come
through.)
GORDON WHITNEY is at the Crown
Heights Hospital, 460 Lefferts Avenue,
Brooklyn. He is recovering from a bad hip
wound and was able to go home for a time,
but is now back in the hospital awaiting
another operation.

BOB RAVEN - A special committee is
being organized to raise $10,000 as a trust
fund for Bob, so that he can become a
partner in a business that will yield him
sufficient income for his support. Watch
for the announcement.

YOUR LIMEY BUDDIES - Anyone who
wishes to get in touch with an English
Veteran can do so by writing to him in
care of the International Brigade
Association, 1 Lichfield Street, London W.
I. England. That's the equivalent of our
organization over there.
STATE DEPT. REPORTS
CONT. FROM PAGE ONE

neither charge nor sentence known, held at
Valdeconedas, Burgos Province; and
Harry Stojewa of Brooklyn, and Manuel
Casal Gonzalez of Cleveland, at Zaragosa.

Some of the money posted with the State
Department was contributed by the
families of the prisoners. But a big share
of the credit for getting it together so
promptly must go to the veterans in charge
of branch offices of the Friends, who sent
in large sums on only two or three days
notice. Four days after the news was
telephone from Washington, Milton Cohen
of the Chicago office had already
delivered $300 to the office of the Friends
in New York. Ben Gardner of Philadelphia
sent in $200, Dave Thompson of San
Francisco $200, Carl Bradley of Baltimore
$100, Goddard of Los Angeles $100 (with
more promised) and Dick Sherod of
Cleveland $50. Families and organizations
sent in $300 more to help fill up the total.
HISTORY AS
SHEEAN SEES IT

Of course all of the Vets will be eager to
get hold of Vincent Sheean's new book,
"Not Peace But a Sword," to see what he
has to say about the Brigades and about
the Spanish War. Many reviewers have
nicked out the chapter on Jim Lardner,
"the last to enlist and the last to be killed."
as the best thing in the book. Here's how it
ends:

"At first it may seem that this was
intolerable waste: that his gifts might have
been more usefully employed in another
way, and for a longer time. But he wanted
to offer his life -- that is clear and if it was
taken, merged into the aggregate of all
those lives given for Spain, it was his
unanswerable contribution to a cause
much greater than any single life. So he
would have said himself he was no Indian-
giver. All those Lardners did not die for
nothing. If the world has a future they
preserved it. They must overcome the
Chamberlains in the end, for provinces and
nations can be signed away, but youth and
honor never."

At a recent meeting of the
executive board of the New York
Post of the Veterans it was
announced that Post Commander
Marty Hourihan had been forced to
resign his office because he was
leaving town. To fill the job until it
would be possible to hold an
election by the membership of the
Post, the executive appointed
Freddie Keller Commander pro tem.
All New York veterans are being
notified by mail of the next Post
meeting at which it is at present
planned to hold the election. Any
Vet whose address has changed or is
not known at the National
Headquarters should call up or drop
a line so as not to miss this
important meeting.
