"THE VOLUNTEER
FOR LIBERTY"
ORGAN OF THE VETERANS OF
THE ABRAHAM LINCOLN BRIGADE

February . . . . . 1938
LINES AND BYLINES.
FLASHBACKS: February, 1957, the 23rd,
Suicide Hill on the 27th (remember the day?),
Pingarron Hill. "Waiting, waiting, waiting,
always bloody well waiting, for over four
months. Martin Houriman, school teacher and
seamen, comes up from the ranks to replace
wounded Bob Merriman as Battalion
Commander. Remember?
And while we're remembering; Recall how we
looked forward to letters from home when we
were "over there." Well, remember that there
are still a few boy out there who wouldn't mind
hearing how you're doing, what you're doing
and why. Sharpen those pencils, Veterans.
ON THE MARRIAGE FRONT:
Did you know that Max Katz is getting
spliced? And on the 27th of February, of all
days. O.K. Maxie, its your headache, but we
wish you the best just the same. This also goes
for Milt Goldstein or Jarama Radio fame. He's
taking it on the chin later on, in March and
while we're listing them, we might add that the
gleam in the eyes of Jerry Warren, Rubin
Schneiderman, and Dave (Mooch) Engels
bodes no good for their standing as bachelors.
(Or maybe we're just jealous).

THE PROBLEM
(GLWRULDO1RWH
This editorial is a condensation of a letter addressed to the President of
the United States following the aerial bombardment of Barcelona and
Valencia on January 19.
"Once again the liberty-loving people throughout the world and in our
own United States, are overcome with horror and indignation at the
barbarous slaughter of the women and children of Barcelona and Valen-
cia.
In the words I. B. Pflaum, United Press Correspondent, "It was the
worst extermination or - noncombatants in this war......the gutters
actually ran with blood. I saw women and children die before medical
aid could be administered."
Today in Spain there are over three thousand American boys serving in
the Abraham Lincoln Brigade; men who volunteered their services to
fight fascism. And while they fight and sacrifice their lives for the
principles which we hold so dear, the American people might well bow
their heads in shame, with the knowledge that under our present so-
called neutrality Act, Nazi freighters can leave American seaports laden
with American bombs for trans-shipment to Franco for more Guernicas.
We remember very clearly the joy with which the American volunteers
and the Spanish people welcomed your stand to "Quarantine aggressor
nations." We who have returned, many of us physically incapacitated
after long months of service in the front line trenches, feel the time has
come for the American people to put a halt to the shipment of munitions
to those who threaten the peace and democracy of the world.
In Congress today, there are those who are prepared to support the stand
that you took in Chicago October 5th. Congressman Jerry J. O'Connell
of Montana has introduced a Peace Bill to amend the Neutrality act in
order to make it an instrument for peace.
We appeal to you to protest in the name of the American people, the
massacre on January 19th in Barcelona and Valencia.
We appeal to you, Mr. President, to lend your support to the Peace Bill
introduced by Congressman O'Connell."
THE SOLUTION
.... "Whenever the President shall find that an act of aggression has been
committed, he shall proclaim such fact and shall name the aggressor in
such proclamation, and it shall thereafter be unlawful to export, or
attempt to export, or cause to be exported, arms, ammunition, or
implements of war from any place in the United States to any aggressor
named in such proclamation, or to any other state for transshipment to,
or for the use of, any such aggressor.'.....
75th Congress, 2d Session. H.J. Res. 527
