Pasiones
A
common quip is that the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War may
have lost the military battle, but they had the best songs. Some
of those songs were reworked last spring at a program honoring the
Chicago area Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade at Roosevelt University.

The musical production, entitled Pasiones, inspired by Lincoln veteran and
pianist Ed Balchowski, was directed by Peter Glazer. Singers Jamie O'Reilly and
Michael Smith performed Spanish Civil War songs that prompted Studs Terkel to
write: "It is more than glorious music they offer; it is history that would oth-
erwise be forgotten. At a time when passion is so lacking in our lives, these
two endearing artists set our hearts afire."
Featuring original Spanish Civil War folk songs in six languages, augmented
by two original songs by Michael Smith, Pasiones has appeared as a musical
revue in several theaters and cabarets in the Chicago area. Pasiones is now
