THE VOLUNTEER, WINTER 1997-98
Hold these dates for VALB-ALBA events
An exhibition of Spanish Civil War posters and docu-
ments is being held at Columbia University's Wallach Art
Gallery from February 4 to March 28. Entitled The
Visual Front, the exhibit features Spanish Civil War
Posters on loan from the Southworth Collection at the
University of California, San Diego.
Named for Herbert Rutledge Southworth, an American
journalist closely associated with the Republican govern-
ment, who wrote anti-Franco articles for the Washington
Post during the war, this material comprises Southworth's
large collection of propaganda pamphlets, journals, mem-
oirs, books, posters and other materials gathered during
his stay in Spain.
In 1966, at the urging of Gabriel Jackson, then a
Professor at UCSD, the University's Mandeville Special
Collections Library purchased the collection and continued
to enlarge it. (In the late Spring of this year that same
west coast library will host ALBA's Aura of the Cause pho-
tographic exhibition.)
Curated by Professor of Art History Alexander
Vergara, who taught at UCSD before coming to Columbia,
The Visual Front will consist of 42 posters, and a selection
of contemporary newspapers and propaganda articles, from
the Southworth Collection. The Wallach Gallery exhibit
will also feature drawings by Spanish children living after
the war in refugee colonies, from Columbia University's
Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library.
An on-line catalogue of the UCSD materials in this
exhibition, authored by Alexander Vergara, Kevin Ingram,
Enrique Sanabria and Theresa Smith, can be found at:

The Wallach Gallery's visiting hours are Wednesday-
Saturday, 1-5 p.m. The gallery is located in the 8th floor of
Schermerhorn Hall, on the Columbia campus, at 116
Street and Broadway in Manhattan. Veterans of the
Abraham Lincoln Brigade, their friends, family members
and ALBA Associates are invited. Columbia University is
reached by No 1 or No. 9 IRT subway trains, or the M104
bus to West 116th Street. Closer to Amsterdam Avenue,
Schermerhorn Hall is one short block across the campus
from Broadway.
The Bay Area Post of the Veterans of the Abraham Lincoln
Brigade will honor Paul Robeson as we approach the centen-
nial of his birth at its annual gathering on March 1 at the
Calvin Simmons Theater, 10 Tenth Street, Oakland,
California. Lunch will be at noon, with the main event
beginning at 2:00 p.m. In addition to special guest speakers,
there will be a theatrical performance of The Artist Must
Take Sides, honoring Paul Robeson in his own words and
music and produced with the help of the San Franciso Mime
Troupe. Good News! This year, the Bay Area Post invited
ALBA to co-sponsor the annual festivities.
