Indianapolis Brickyard 400 August 4
The track has four straightaways, the long front and back stretches and the
shorter straightaways between Turns 1 and 2 and Turns 3 and 4. The cars
need a lot of horsepower to run well on the straights, but handling is just as
essential. Drivers must get off Turn 1 and Turn 3 well to set up for the
short chutes. Because the cars are running almost wide-open going into
Turns 2 and 4, they tend to push toward the wall and can become difficult
to turn, especially during long green-flag runs. As big as this track is, it's
basically one groove all the way around; the fast way is around the bottom.
Side-by-side racing isn't the norm because it slows the cars so much.
Jimmy Spencer on Indianapolis: "I love this racetrack. To me, this is a
track where you can't get too aggressive, but you've got to drive on the
edge. I love driving on the edge. That doesn't scare me."
