Free Speech TV Cable Project - openschool
The projected launch date of the campaign is planned for middle of July 2000. At that
time we are expecting to have secured coordinators for various countries involved along
with contacts locally and abroad. The launch date will commence the support activities
such as those described below:
- Organize signature drives
- Speaking tours delivered by students in schools and other public facilities
- Raise awareness through your local media and press as well as through your local gov-
ernment representative
- Write to United Nations Special Investigator in charge of education requesting media-
tion on educational changes inside Burma
The peak of the campaign is expected in the end of October 2000 at which time, there
will be a Global Action Day. On this day countries all over the world will united in sup-
port of this campaign by coordinating awareness raising activities which are to be deter-
mined at a later date.
Recent Developments
An education seminar was held in Northern Thailand on 29 May 2 June 2000 organized
by the Campaign Committee for Open School and National Health and Education Com-
mittee. It was a successful event at which the information regarding the campaign was
distributed to the various organizations residing along the Thai-Burma Border. Issues of
Educational reform in Burma were also discussed. The resolutions from the seminar
were that, in order for the campaign to be successful, it must not only aim at opening
schools inside Burma but also demand educational reform.
A video for the campaign was produced by Jeanne Hallacy and Aung Myo Min. The video
was launched at the Foreign Correspondence Club in Bangkok. The session included a
screening of the video followed by a question and answer period. The video will be dis-
tributed as part of the information package that we will be sending to our representative
abroad.
The current activity that the Campaign Committee is conducting is trying to establish
contacts and find representatives to help with activities within their respective countries.
If you or someone you know might be interested then please inform the Campaign Com-
mittee in how you can help as well as how many people will be able to assist you. After
you reply, we will then send you further information along with necessary materials and
details on how you can support the campaign.
