Dr. Freer opened the world's highest medical clinic on April 1, 2003
at Mt. Everest Base Camp, just as climbers began to arrive to mark
the 50th anniversary of the first ascent. Located at 17,600 ft
(5,350 m), the tent-based clinic provides medical care for ailments
such as high altitude sickness, frostbite, snow blindness, and trauma
to climbers, Sherpas, and trekkers. Hear the amazing story of
what it's like to plan, setup, and provide medical care in one of the
world's coldest and most austere environments. Guests welcome.
In 1953, Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary stood together on the summit of Mt Everest,
above and apart from the rest of the world, wrapped in private triumph...a perfect moment.
But as they turned to descend, they could not appreciate the tide of human clamor that awaited
them. Norgay later said that if he had known what awaited him, he might have stayed on the
mountain forever.
No expedition has ever reached the summit of Everest without the assistance of the legendary
Sherpas. A proud and enigmatic people, the Sherpas and their culture have been changed
irrevocably, in both positive and negative ways, as a result of the endless influx of western
culture through the trekking and climbing industry. Tashi Tenzing, grandson of Tenzing
Norgay, two-time Everest summitter, and author of Tenzing Norgay and the Sherpas of Everest
tells the story of Everest from the Sherpa perspective.

MEDICINE ON EVEREST:
The Ultimate Wilderness
A two-time Emmy nominated film by award-winning film maker Michael Brown
of Serac Adventure Films takes an intimate look inside one of the most successful
Everest expeditions ever. The 75-minute film captures the emotions, humor, and
drama of blind climber Erik Weihenmayer's historic ascent, as well as four other
remarkable "firsts" on Everest. "Though there were questions about the wisdom of
the attempt before the team even left home, the clear and definitive success of the
expedition proves what people working together, with a common vision,
can accomplish," says Brown. This film has raised over $1,000,000 for worthy
nonprofit organizations and is being shown for the first time to a wilderness
medicine audience. All proceeds from this viewing will benefit the Wilderness
Medical Society. See Monday's Program for details.
