Examine the adjoining room lock and be sure it functioning
properly

Be sure that the door and window locks function properly
o
Check the phone for proper functioning and that you can get
an outside line without having to go through the hotel
operator.
o
Locate the nearest fire exit check exit doors to make sure
they can be opened
o
Are exit signs illuminated
o
Make a note on the back of the business cards that you
place by your bed noting the number of doors between your
room and the emergency exit in each direction and the
location of a fire extinguishers
Traveling by rental car:

Check the condition of the vehicle, spare tire, amount of fuel in
tank, jack, lug wrench etc.

Hide road maps and other material that say "tourist."
·
Select a car that doesn't not advertise the rental car company
ownership
·
Make sure the air conditioning works so that you can keep the
windows closed
·
Always carry a cell phone (or something that looks like a cell
phone) If you think you are being followed get your phone out and
very obviously call the police or pretend you are calling the police.
·
DO NOT stop for anyone
·
Be sure that rental cars are equipped with the appropriate safety
equipment and that it is in working order.
·
Make sure that your insurance covers the use of a rental car
outside the US.
·
If "bumped" don't stop, drive to the nearest police station.
In the Street
·
Thieves look for a "wallet bulge."
·
Carry a "mugger's wallet with a big bill in the front and a few
smaller bills behind along with a photo ID, some other papers,
coupons etc. for bulk. In an emergency this can be surrendered
·
Carry your wallet in a front pocket, sideways, with a rubber band
around it if you must carry a wallet. Rubber bands increases
friction and draws your attention.
·
Watch out for someone carrying a jacket it's a cover for a
pickpocket
·
