Tanya Plant Rhodes Scholar
"I chose to enrol in Rural Technology because of its practical slant and relevance to the rural
industry. Since graduating I have worked with the South-East Graziers Association and I am
amazed at the career opportunities that are available. Many of my classmates have
succeeded in wide range of fields and positions. I will be forever grateful that I went to UQ
Gatton. I made some great friends there, fast tracked my career, and opened doors to
opportunities. It was the right choice for me, and I am now taking up my Rhodes
Scholarship at Oxford University in England."
The first four semesters of this degree are
similar across the four specialisations. It is
therefore possible for students to transfer
between specialisations up to the end of
second year with full credit.
Animal science/Plant and soil science:
The animal science and plant and soil
science specialisations of this degree have
a science orientation with a research focus.
In the first two years, students obtain a
broad knowledge of plants, soils, animals,
basic science and economics which
enables them to develop interests for
specialist study in the third and fourth
years of the program.
Rural management:
This specialisation, which focuses on
agricultural business management, includes
a unique balance between science,
technology and management. Students
obtain a broadly based knowledge of
applied aspects of animal and plant
production supported by a detailed
knowledge of disciplines essential to the
efficient and effective management of an
agricultural enterprise (economics, finance,
marketing, human resources). There is a
strong emphasis on problem solving skills
within a production environment.
Rural technology:
This degree focuses on scientific and
technological developments and industry
needs. A six-month industry placement
mid-way through the program lets students
put theory into practice before returning to
complete the final three semesters of the
program.
