Safety on
campus
To ensure a safe environment for students,
staff and visitors at the St Lucia and UQ
Gatton campuses, security staff are on duty
24 hours a day, seven days a week. A
student security escort service (UNISAFE)
is available for people moving between
classes, car parks and other areas after
sunset.
Sport and
recreation
With its extensive campus sites, the
University of Queensland provides
outstanding facilities for many sporting
pursuits, catering for everyone from the
social sports person to the serious athlete.
Facilities at both campuses include lit
sporting ovals; tennis, netball, basketball,
squash and beach volleyball courts; and
Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Food and
entertainment
The UQ Gatton Student Association
coordinates many activities to ensure
students enjoy their campus life. Entertain-
ment includes events such as dances,
concerts, movies, debates, barbecues, car
rallies, swimming and sports carnivals. For
less strenuous activity, the campus also has
a cafe and licensed club.
At St Lucia, students can take in on-
campus entertainment such as concerts
(from classical to alternative), films and
theatrical productions, shop at weekly
markets or relax at a number of cafes and a
licensed club.
Childcare
A number of child care, kindergarten and
after-school care facilities are available on
the St Lucia campus. Nyamul Child Care
Centre at UQ Gatton provides day care for
children from five weeks to five years.
Transport and
parking
BRISBANE
Regular Brisbane City Council bus
services operate between the University,
the city, Indooroopilly and Chapel Hill,
also providing connections to nearby train
stations.
The Brisbane City Council CityCat
ferry service, cruising between Hamilton
and the University, operates at least half
hourly from 6.00am to 10.30pm, seven
days a week.
The West End and Dutton Park ferries
provide cross-river connections to St
Lucia. A free bus service, sponsored by the
University and Brisbane Ferry Services,
operates from the Dutton Park ferry
terminus in the evening during semester.
Passengers are picked up at the terminus
and set down at various stops including the
Park Road and Dutton Park railway
stations.
Cycling is another popular option, with
the St Lucia campus connected to the city
centre and beyond by a dedicated bike
track along the river.
UQ GATTON
An express bus service runs between the
UQ Gatton and St Lucia campuses twice a
day, Monday to Friday, during semester.
Information on times and fares is available
from the Student Centre in the JD Story
Building at St Lucia or from the Student
Centre in the Briton Building Annexe at
UQ Gatton.
A rail-bus service runs between
Brisbane and Gatton. The train stops at
Rosewood and passengers are transported
by bus to the centre of UQ Gatton.
Express coaches travelling between
Brisbane and Toowoomba stop at UQ
Gatton. Timetables are available from
Queensland Rail and McCafferty's bus
company.
Student life
Accommodation
Living in colleges puts students at the centre of campus
life, and provides them with individual study bedrooms,
common social and recreational spaces, laundry facilities
and other support services along with meals.
There are 10 residential colleges on the St Lucia
campus providing accommodation for around 2000
students.
Accommodation for 350 students is provided on the
Gatton campus in four halls of residence. Applications
for residential accommodation at UQ Gatton are enclosed
with offers of quota places for all internal courses of
study at Gatton.
