Fees and costs
HIGHER EDUCATION CONTRIBUTION SCHEME
(HECS)

required to contribute to the cost of their
education through HECS, unless specifically
exempt.
All new students must, upon enrolment,
complete a HECS payment options form (part
of the enrolment form) nominating one of the
three options: exempt, up-front payment, or
deferred through tax. Students who elect to
defer their HECS payments must provide their
Tax File Number.

2001, the contribution for a standard full-time
study load ranged from $5015 to $5870 for the
year, depending on the courses undertaken.
Part-time students pay proportionally less.

laboratory coats usually can be bought second-
hand look for advertisements on notice boards
around campus.

for first-year students, plus many other
publications of interest and a wide range of
equipment such as calculators and computer
software.
Financial
assistance
Australian students are entitled to apply for
financial assistance under the Austudy Scheme.
The availability and amount of assistance
depends upon an income and assets test. A
similar scheme exists for Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Island students (Abstudy). Application
information will be forwarded to everyone who
submits an application for quota entry to QTAC.
Information and applications are also available
from your nearest Austudy/Abstudy or
