Mindframe 1, Previewing, is a specific way to
use brain power when studying. Previewing sets
the stages for learning. It enables you to get the
big picture, the overall design of what you
will study before you turn your attention to
the details.
Research tells us that 80% of what you need
to learn is contained in 20% of the material you
study. Known as the 80-20 rule, this finding
supports the importance of knowing what to
study before you begin previewing.This is the
sneak preview of the Chapter.
Think about when you go to a restaurant
and look at the menu. First you skim over the
pages, scanning the types of food offered at the
restaurant and then you skip from area to area,
looking for foods you like or don't like.This is
Mindframe 1, Previewing, at work.You are
going through this process, not paying attention
to the details yet, in order to make up your
mind.When a student previews a Chapter,
she/he will first skim through the pages, scan-
ning the photos and titles.Then, she/he will skip
around looking for things she/he might already
know or want to know more about and things
that she/he might think look difficult to learn.
Salon Fundamentals also helps students
see the value, big idea (major message of the
Chapter), along with the plan, the way the
Chapter is laid out. By setting the stage for
learning using Mindframe 1, Previewing,
students are starting the process of knowing the
Chapter. Interest and self-confidence originate
from Mindframe 1, Previewing.

Each SmartNotes page found in the Study
Guide identifies the topic being studied along
with the corresponding page numbers in the
textbook where information on this topic can
be found. In addition, SmartNotes list the key
terms of ideas that the student should pay close
attention to when studying the assigned
topic.These dynamic SmartNotes pages
provide a jump-start for
student learning.
Naming is modeled from Dr.Walter
Paulk's note-taking system called
Cornell Notes. Salon Fundamentals
refers to the naming or note-
taking components as SmartNotes.
Mindframe 2, Naming, is
designed to help students using
the SmartNotes by keying into a
specific use of brain power. In
effect, naming encourages the students
to actively process the material and
make sense of what it is they are learning.
In a sense, they are rewriting the
textbook by taking their own notes and
transforming what they are studying into
products and thoughts
that make sense to them.This personalizing of
the information helps learning last forever. Just
copying what someone else has written usually
makes it more difficult to remember. Putting it
into your own words or short phrases and
drawing a picture, cartoon or doodle will help
build long-term retention.
SmartNotes also help the learner realize
how important the information is by
seeing how much room is allowed for
her/his notes. Important ideas have
more space dedicated for note tak-
ing. Likewise, less important ideas
have less space.
Mindframe 2, Naming, is a powerful
learning tool that builds long-term
retention and encourages learner inter-
est and responsibility for learning.
The SmartNotes Pages become
a journal of student learning, reference
and review.Teaching becomes much
easier when the student is actively involved
or truly engaged in the topic being
