Glasses or contact lenses must be removed.
Eye makeup must be removed with an oil-free
makeup remover and then the eye area is
dried thoroughly. Based on hair color, eye
color and skin tone, an appropriate tint shade
is selected.
The tint with the amount of developer recom-
mended by the manufacturer is combined in
a small cup and mixed thoroughly. When
tinting eyelashes, manufacturer-provided eye
protectors (or flat cotton pads, which you fold
and cut into slight moon shapes on the fold)
are used. The pads are moistened and a thin
film of petroleum jelly is applied along the
edges of the pads. The edges of the pads are
then placed along the lower eyelashes. The
petroleum jelly prevents the tint from staining
the skin. The tint is applied to the eyelashes
and/or eyebrows, using a small, disposable,
spool-type brush. When eyelashes and
eyebrows are thoroughly saturated, the brush
is discarded and the tint is allowed to process
for 15 to 20 minutes. Excess tint is removed
with a moistened cotton swab or a cotton pad
with water or makeup remover. Eyebrows may
be tweezed or waxed if desired.
Product Knowledge
It is essential to use aniline-free tinting
products manufactured expressly for eyebrow
and eyelash tinting when performing this
service. Any other dye could be extremely
hazardous to your client, causing skin or eye
irritation, infection or even blindness.
Airbrushing
Airbrushing has become popular among
makeup artists because of its unique application
technique and the effects it can create. This
method gives the artist greater control over the
amount of pigment being applied. Pigment is
applied by a stream of air that pushes pigment
out of gun-like implement with the use of a
compressor. The air, along with the pigment, is
applied to the skin often with the use of stencils
to give more control to the area of application.
Airbrushing creates a flawless, smooth
appearance and is regularly used for theatrical
performances, high-fashion runway, art form
designs and now, high-definition television. Its
ability to create a greater illusion of depth and
contour on such a high level, results in the actor
(client) appearing more three-dimensional on
the screen. The most popular use is foundation
application and body art, however it can be used
in all aspects of makeup design. Special classes
are available to be trained in this technique.
Permanent Makeup
Permanent makeup is a separate specialty within
the field of tattooing. It involves the placement
of colorants into the skin for the purpose of
cosmetic enhancement, medical correction
and/or esthetic restoration as defined by the
American Academy of Micropigmentation.
CAUTION:
Be very, very careful removing tint. Excess tint
might get in the client's eye if you use too much
pressure or not enough product or water.
