Like many other aspects of makeup design, blush application, particularly
placement of color and choice of product, will follow fashion trends. Be
sure the application you choose is also the most flattering to your client
and not just following the current trend.
1. Using a large, fluffy angled brush, sweep blush over the apple
(fleshy) part of the cheek, starting from under the center of the eye and
no further down than the tip of the nose. Extend up toward the hairline.
2. Lightly apply loose powder over the blush to blend if needed.
3. For a crème blush, apply three small dots of color on the apple
of the cheek (prior to applying powder). Lightly blend into cheek,
making sure edges are well-blended.
APPLYING BLUSH
Blush
Blush, sometimes referred to as rouge or
cheek color, is used to add color to the face,
especially to the cheek area. Since the purpose
of foundation is to even out skin tone, the face
may appear to be flat or dull before blush is
applied. Blush can also be used to add shape
to the face.
Types of Blush
Blushes are available in crème, gel and powder
forms. As noted on page 423, crème and gel
products are usually applied prior to the
application of facial powder, usually with a
small sponge, and are best suited for normal
to dry skin. Powdered blush is applied after
facial powder, usually with a brush, and is
preferred for oily skin.
Selecting a Blush
The lightness or darkness and undertone of
your client's skin will determine the value and
tone of the blush color you recommend.
Blush should coordinate with the tones of the
rest of the makeup application. For example, a
warm-colored eye makeup and lip color
requires a warm blush color, while cooler
makeup color requires a cooler blush color.
Blush should be applied for a soft, subtle
effect. Apply to the apple of the cheek (fleshy
part), being careful not to apply it beyond the
middle of the eye close to the nose. Be sure
not to blend up into the temple. Blush should
not be applied any lower than the point on the
cheek that is parallel to the end of the nose.
If blush has been applied too heavily, soften
the effect by applying translucent powder over
the cheek color and blending it with a clean
makeup sponge.
When applying eye and cheek color, try to have
two brushes on hand--one to apply color and
one to blend the color that you have applied.
