A papule (PAP-yool) is a small elevation of the
skin, usually inflammatory, that does not
contain pus. Papules are similar to vesicles
in size, and if they progress, they can
become pustules.
A pustule (PUST-yool) is a small inflamed
elevation, the next step in the progression from
a papule, filled with bacterial fluid and pus.
Pustules appear red and cloudy or white.
Milia (MIL-ee-uh) are pearly white enclosed
cysts. Each milium is a small cyst that is hard to
the touch and difficult to remove since it is
trapped beneath a layer of skin in a cystic
structure. Milia have often been referred to as
"baby acne," and usually develop on the face
around the eyes. Milia can result from
aggressive exfoliation, dermabrasion, or other
healing from damaged skin. The esthetician may
be required to use a lancet to remove them, and
will find that the sebum, dead skin cells and
bacteria have formed into a small, hard ball. Note
that lancing or puncturing the skin is not legal in
some states or regions, so check with your area's
regulating agency.
Nodular cystic acne is characterized by

ACNE MYTHS
Myth #1:
Acne is caused by a poor diet.
Extensive scientific studies have found no
connection between diet and acne. Food does
not cause acnenot chocolate, french fries nor
pizza. Nonetheless, some people insist that
certain foods affect their acne. If that is the case
with your client, advise him or her to avoid
those foods. Eating a balanced diet always
makes sense, but according to the scientific
evidence, if acne is being treated properly, there
is no need to worry about food affecting it.
Myth #2:
You just have to let acne run its course.
The truth is, acne can be cleared up. Advise your
client to see a dermatologist. With the products
available today, there is no reason why someone
has to endure acne or get acne scars.
