closed during the steam treatment and do not use
eye pads. If ozone is used, turn the switch on after
steam has begun to flow. A few drops of essential
oil can be added to the opening where the steam
comes out.
Distilled or filtered water must be used in the
vaporizer. The container that holds the water is made
of either glass or metal and should be cleaned with
distilled water and white vinegar at least once a
month. Be sure to study and follow the
manufacturer's instructions for information about
how to use the steamer, the amount of water to be
used and how to clean the steamer. Improper
care of a steamer can result in mineral build-up
on the heating element. Check the water level
several times throughout the day. If the water
gets too low, the glass container can burst, so be
sure to turn the steamer off when it is not in use.
Steam stimulates the skin and the sebaceous
glands. It should be used sparingly if the client
is experiencing any of the following conditions:
·
Sensitive to extremely sensitive skin
·
Couperose skin (dilated capillaries)
·
Acne or rosacea
·
Sunburn
·
Skin irritation
·
Open cuts, abrasions or sores
Suction Machine
The suction machine acts like a miniature vacuum
cleaner to aid in deep pore cleansing by drawing
out dirt, impurities and sebum. The machine
features a small, handheld glass attachment and
provides very light suction on the surface of the
skin. Massage can be eliminated when suction
is performed because the machine provides
adequate stimulation of the client's skin. The
suction is not strong enough to dislodge most
blackheads. However, blackheads and sebum
deposits are more easily extracted manually
after the vacuum is used.
The suction machine features a variety of sizes of
glass suction cups for different areas of the face.
The large cup is used on the neck, jaw, cheeks and
forehead. The smaller cup is used on the chin, the
area between the nose and upper lip, the space
between the eyes and the sides of the nose. Each
cup has a small hole on one side. In order to
create suction on the skin's surface, the cup
must be flush with the surface of the client's
The facial steamer or vaporizer was among the
first pieces of electrical equipment used in the
esthetics profession.
