Color Schemes
Monochromatic color schemes use the same color (with variations in value and intensity) through-
out the face design.
Analogous color schemes use three colors that are adjacent to each other on the color wheel; often
used for daytime face designs. (See pink arrows on color wheel illustration.)
Triadic color schemes use three colors located in a triangular position on the color wheel and are
often used for more vibrant face designs. (See blue arrows on color wheel illustration.)
Complementary color schemes use colors that are across from each other on the color wheel in order
to achieve the greatest amount of contrast and are often used to enhance eye color.
Warm and Cool are terms used to describe the tones found in both skin colors and cosmetic colors.
Warm colors have red or yellow tones within them and cool colors have more blue tones within them.
Remember that dark colors seem to recede and diminish the appearance of features or
areas, while lighter colors seem to advance, making features or areas appear larger or more
prominent.
Makeup Essentials
To perform a professional makeup service, you will need the proper selection of products, implements
and equipment. Makeup products are produced by many different manufacturers, are disposable and
must be frequently replaced. MSDS guidelines for all products used in the salon must be easily
available for your use. Makeup implements are hand-held tools, which must be disinfected or
discarded after each use. Makeup equipment includes the furnishings and provisions necessary to
provide a professional makeup service.
