Hangnails may be trimmed to the
surface of the skin. Note that cut-
ting or trimming cuticles is illegal in
some areas. Check with your area's
regulating agency.

Scrub hand and nails with a nail
brush in a downward direction and then
dry hand.

Clean under the free-edge of each
nail with a cotton-wrapped orangewood
stick. Pat hand dry. Repeat cuticle care
and cleaning on the opposite hand.
Massage
The massage portion of the manicure is
key to the relaxation and pampering of the
client. The following are some basic tech-
niques. Be guided by your instructor for
additional manipulations.

Apply massage lotion or cream
from elbow to forearm and down to the
fingertips to prepare for the massage.
Perform massage techniques on both
hands using long rhythmic effleurage
strokes. Rotate in a circular motion to
loosen the wrist.
11.
Massage fingers using a circular
motion called joint movement.
12.
Knead palm with petrissage, moving
thumbs in a circular motion from wrist to
fingers.
13.
Remove all traces of massage
lotion or cream from nails before apply-
ing polish. Use a cotton-wrapped orange-
wood stick soaked in polish remover
underneath and on the surface of the nail.
