Set the timer according to man-
ufacturer's directions. Perform strand
test for desired degree of lightness.
13-14.
Remove cotton and apply
newly mixed lightener to base only,
beginning at top of back. Then outline
each section to ensure even coverage. Be
extremely careful when you outline the
front hairline. Bring each section down to
allow for air oxidation.
15-16.
Perform strand test periodi-
cally. Rinse the hair with cool water,
shampoo and towel dry when you
reach the desired degree of lightness.
Re-examine the scalp for abrasions
and any irritations.

The area along the hair strand
where two colors meet (i.e.,
the area where the new
growth meets the previously
colored hair) is known as the
line of demarcation. It is
important to avoid overlapping
the product, especially with a
lightener retouch service,
since it could cause breakage.
Optional: An alternative
application method includes
beginning at the nape and
applying the product to one
side of the strand only as
shown on the DVD. Therefore,
be guided by your
instructor and
regulating agency.
