SALON FUNDAMENTALS
Infection Control and Safety
Infection control and safety while performing nail services is essential in order to protect the
health and well-being of you and your client.
It begins with your conscientious efforts to keep
your nail table clean and organized and continues throughout the service. Always:
· Wash your hands and have your client wash their hands with liquid antibacterial soap.
· Follow manufacturer's directions on all products being used.
· Avoid filing too deeply into the corners of the nails to prevent ingrown nails.
· Wash implements with soap and water then disinfect after every service; store in a dry,
covered container and handle sharp-pointed implements carefully.
· Wear protective gloves during nail services, if required.
· Clean and disinfect nail service tabletop after every service.
· Check that all bottle tops and container lids are tightly sealed and labeled.
· Empty soaking solution from finger bowl. Disinfect and replace with fresh solution for
every client.
· Clean the surface of the foot bath ensuring that all debris is removed from behind the drain
screen; disinfect following manufacturer's directions.
· Arrange all products and implements in proper order.
· Handle all products carefully and avoid spillage. Use spatulas to remove creams from
containers.
· Practice blood spill procedures if a blood spill occurs.
· Discard non-reusable materials such as emery boards in a closed (container) waste receptacle.
Blood Spill Procedure
If a blood spill should occur, use the following steps:
1. Stop the service and wash your hands.
2. Cover your hands with protective gloves.
3. Supply the injured party with styptic powder or spray and the appropriate dressing to
cover the injury. If you are injured, cover the area with a finger guard or glove, as
appropriate.
4. Do not allow containers, brushes, nozzles or styptic container to touch the skin or come
in contact with the wound.
5. Disinfect implements and work station with a broad spectrum disinfectant.
6. Double-bag all blood-soiled (contaminated) articles and label the bag as hazardous waste or
as directed by your area's regulating agency.
7. Remove your gloves and clean your hands with a liquid antibacterial soap.
8. Return to client and continue the service.
