Preliminary Strand Test
A preliminary strand test is a color test that is performed (24-48 hours) before the actual hair color
service. The important factors you'll discover by performing a strand test and analyzing the results
prior to the service include:
· Correct formula and processing time to be used
· The reaction of the hair and what particular procedures may be needed to ensure proper
color absorption (conditioning, filling, etc.)
· The possible presence of coating on the hair from previous applications that could be dam-
aging or undesirable when new color is applied (metallic, henna, styling aid build-up, etc.)
The intended color formula is mixed and applied to a section of hair, preferably somewhere that is
visible for the client to see as well, such as above the ear area. You may do as many strand tests as
necessary. For example, if the hair has not reached the desired degree (level) of lightness, addition-
al processing time would be required.
Preliminary Strand Test Guidelines
· Wash and sanitize hands.
· Analyze the patch test results; if negative, proceed with service.
· Drape client for chemical service.
· Wear protective gloves and stylist apron.
· Isolate a small section of hair at the crown or another area of your choice
(preferably an area where the results are visible to the client).
· Apply the intended color formula.
· Set the timer.
· Rinse, shampoo and dry the hair.
· Make any necessary color formula adjustments. Analyze and document
your results.
· Clean color service area.
Strand Test (During Service) Guidelines
Strand testing during the color service will help ensure that color is processing prop-
erly. Therefore, you should perform strand tests in several areas, such as the most
resistant area and the area of the initial application. Strand testing during processing is most often
performed when you are working with oxidative colors and lighteners but can also be performed for
nonoxidative colors. To perform a strand test, you will need a water bottle and white towel.
· Select a small section of hair.
· Position the selected strand on a towel.
· Spray water along the entire strand.
· Gently rub across the strand to remove the product thoroughly.
· Check results against a white towel.
· If results are desirable, rinse, shampoo and condition the strand.
· If results are not desirable, continue processing until proper results are
achieved.
