Off Base: The tool or curl sits below the bottom parting of the base, creating minimum base
strength and the least volume or lift. The hair is held at 45° below the center of the base and rolled
to sit below the bottom parting.
Underdirected: The tool or curl sits in the lower portion of the base, but not on or below the part-
ing. The size of the base must be at least one and one half times the diameter of the tool or curl.
The base control results in reduced volume and base strength. The hair is held at 90° from the
center of the base and rolled to sit in the lower portion of the base.
Overdirected (Volume Base):
The tool or curl sits in the upper portion of the base, but not on or
above the parting. The size of the base must be at least one and one half times the diameter of the
tool or curl. This base control results in exaggerated directional movement and volume or lift, with
less strength at the base. The hair is held at 45° above the center of the base and rolled to sit in the
upper portion of the base.
