· One diameter means that the width of the section is exactly the same as the diameter of the
tool being used. This size is also referred to as equal or full diameter. Note that the length
of the section should be equivalent to the length of the tool.
· A 1.5 diameter section indicates the width of the section is one and one half times the width
of the tool being used for placement. Notice, however, that the length of the section is still
equivalent to the length of the tool being used.
· A two-diameter section indicates that the width of the section is equal to two times the
diameter of the tool. The length of the base is still influenced by the length of the tool
being used.
Tool Position
The base controls that are used in hairstyling are the same, regardless of the technique or tool being
used (rollers, pincurls or thermal irons). They are:
On Base (Full Base): The tool or curl is centered between the top and bottom partings of the base.
This base control will result in the most volume and the strongest base strength. The base is equal
to the length and diameter of the roller or tool being used. The hair is held at 45° above the center
of the base, then rolled to the center of the base.
Half-Off Base (Half Base): The tool or curl sits directly on the bottom parting of the base, with
half the curl on the base and half the curl off the base. The resulting curl has less base strength and
less volume (lift) than an on-base curl. The hair is held at 90° from the center of the base and is
rolled to sit on the bottom parting.
